On Friday, the US government announced in a message to the nation the new sanctions it will have against Iran after it has attacked US military bases with missiles in Iraq. Mike Pompeo, secretary of state, mentioned that these measures are being taken against the Iranian security apparatus.
This coup affects 8 senior Iranian officials, including Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, deputy chief of the Armed Forces cabinet and militia commander Basij Gholamreza Soleimani considered responsible for the repression to the recent anti-government protests. These measures will also impact economic sectors of construction, manufacturing, textiles, and steel, iron and copper producers in the country

On Wednesday, January 8, Iran fired 22 missiles at US military bases that housed the military in Iraq. This attack without victims was Tehran’s response to the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani by the United States, who died in a bombing that was committed against the transport vehicle in which he was moving near Baghdad airport.
General Soleimani was the head of the elite body Quds, a unit that was responsible for carrying out covert military secret operations outside the Iranian people. He was considered the military with the greatest power in Iran and as the possible next supreme leader of this country.
Donald Trump would be applying what is called a strategy of maximum pressure on Tehran, to force this country to accept the renegotiation of the nuclear agreement previously agreed by Iran with several world powers where the United States is located. This pact was signed and promoted by former President Barack Obama, but Trump decided to abandon the agreement saying that a document and an agreement were sufficient to ensure that Tehran does not continue with the development of nuclear weapons. Tehran in response said its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
