Wildfires devastate Áncash eucalyptus forests

In July, Áncash suffered four forest fires and one urban fire in 48 hours. However, the tragedy did not stop there and a new one was re-registered in less than two weeks. This has been a severe blow to the nature of the northern region during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The July report happened in the Lacabamba district, Pallasca province. The fire destroyed three hectares of eucalyptus forest and the cause of the emergency is still unknown. Another fire occurred in the Cusca district, Corongo province, which affected four areas of eucalyptus and shrub forests.

The fire also consumed several hectares of natural pastures that also occurred in the Sierra area, in Caraz, capital of the province of Huaylas. In the coastal district of Moro, province of Santa, the fire consumed two hectares of grassland in the Villa Mercedes sector.

The Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) reported that a new event occurred yesterday at 10:00 a.m. in the Huamantanga sector of the Huari province. This affected not only trees but also pine plantations.

According to witnesses, to control the fire, the residents of the area and the Municipal Provincial Huari citizen security personnel joined forces to extinguish the fire. It was completely turned off the same day at 5:00 p.m.

According to the evaluation carried out to assess the damage of the disaster by COER Áncash and the head of the Disaster Risk Management Unit, the fire consumed one hectare of vegetation cover and affected a thousand pine plantations in the region, which was a heartbreaking blow to nature.
