2020 Tokyo Olympics suspended

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Tokyo Olympics, Morihiro and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike held a telephone conversation with the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, at 7 am (Hong Kong time). In which Bach advised postponing the Olympics until 2021.

The Prime Minister thanked the IOC for being on the same page in this important decision. The Olympic Committee has already received the new extended schedule and will need to make a decision as soon as possible. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are the first games in history to be postponed, for a reason other than warfare.

Shinzo Abe told a press conference that as a host country, Japan will use this year to create a much better environment for a safe Olympics. He added that it was he who proposed to Bach to delay the Olympics by one year. Which replied according to the Japanese Prime Minister: «I agree 100%.»

The first time the Japanese Prime Minister considered postponing the games was when he attended the Senate meeting, where he recognized that it would be the best option. COVID-19 has continued to wreak havoc worldwide since the end of January, which is why multinational Olympic Committees, sports organizations and elite athletes previously requested that the International Committee postpone the event.
