The ceremony, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, presented its nominees for its 72nd edition this year. If you don’t know what to see this weekend, check out the list of nominees at the end of this article for inspiration.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, ATAS, announced the list of nominees for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards. Leslie Jones was in charge of announcing the nominees through the academy’s YouTube channel.
Due to COVID-19, the broadcast will be live, but the ceremony will be virtual, filming the nominees from their homes, with the option of dressing as they wish, described in the executive producers’ letter: «Come as you are, but make an effort!».
Streaming Platforms
The strength of streaming platforms was shown this year, Netflix having the majority of nominations with 42 in different categories, followed by HBO with 38. In fact, the shows with the most nominations were those on the HBO platform: Watchmen with 26 nominations and Succession with 18. Followed by Ozark with 18 and The Crown with 13 nominations, both offered on Netflix. In turn, Disney+’s The Mandalorian received 15 nominations, including Best Drama.
#LatinosAreOnTVToo
One of the big controversies that were created during the announcement of the nominees was the obliteration of Latino nominees in the main categories of the ceremony.
The month of July was marked by marches due to the death of George Floyd, and the search for shows with African-American representations during the month was on the rise. Consequently, voting for this year’s nominations was influenced by this fact, resulting in more African American nominees. The Emmy’s were better represented, but not by everyone. This only highlighted the gap in anti-racism issues in Hollywood, the Latino community. The #LatinosAreOnTVToo trending hashtag began to grow.
Vida, One Day at a Time, and Netflix’s Gentefied are some of the series that were mentioned as being snubbed by ATAS. As well as the actors Rita Moreno (One Day at a Time), Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian), Mj Rodriguez (Pose), and Diego Luna (Narcos).
This time Jimmy Kimmel will host the Emmys 2020, which is scheduled to air live on September 20 at 7 p.m. m. Peruvian time.
